Food Save Social App
Project Type-Mobile App
Software-Adobe XD
Overview
Food Save is a mobile application designed to raise awareness, track consumption habits, and promote individual action to reduce food waste. Unlike many existing food waste apps that cater primarily to businesses or focus solely on redistributing surplus food, Food Save centers on empowering individuals to make mindful changes in their everyday consumption. With an intuitive interface, goal-setting features, and educational prompts, the app blends behavioral tracking with community-driven action.
Year-Spring 2025
Approach
Before starting the design process, I explored existing solutions like Too Good to Go, Kitche, NoWaste, and Pantry Check. These apps, while effective, largely serve business-to-consumer needs or prioritize pantry monitoring. I saw a gap in tools that support personal accountability and education around food waste, particularly for students, families, and eco-conscious individuals.
To address this, I designed Food Save with the following pillars:
Awareness: Provide users with facts, tips, and push notifications to educate them about food waste and sustainability.
Tracking & Action: Allow users to log grocery items, monitor consumption patterns, set waste-reduction goals, and receive tailored suggestions.
Community & Impact: Enable users to donate extra food, find volunteering opportunities, and view their collective impact.
The visual identity reflects the app’s mission: a clean, minimal interface using teal (sustainability), red (action), beige (neutrality), and a light teal accent. The circular logo, featuring a red bowl, conveys nourishment and the cycle of responsible consumption. Typography is kept clean using the Nobel font family, while 2D vector graphics add warmth and approachability.

Challenge
The main challenge was designing an experience that encourages behavior change without overwhelming the user. Many users are unaware of their food waste footprint, so the app had to be both educational and actionable. I focused on:
Simplifying data input for ease of habit tracking
Designing non-intrusive alerts and feedback loops
Offering rewarding insights and a community feel to keep users engaged
Balancing functionality with simplicity ensured that the app remains inviting while still driving long-term behavioral impact.
